US House of Representatives Passes Patent Reform Bill

US House of Representatives Passes Patent Reform Bill

Yesterday, the US House of Representatives voted 304-117 in favour of sweeping changes to the US patent system which will see a switch from the long standing first-to-invent system to a first-to-file system. It is envisaged that this will help reduce the backlog of patent applications at the USPTO and harmonise the US system with most other national patent systems across the world.

This follows the Senate’s 95-5 passage of a similar bill in March. The two bills must now be reconciled before an enrolled bill goes before the White House.
