Practice & Professional Experience

Cathrine has wide-ranging expertise and experience in the technical fields of physics, mechanics and electronics, including optoelectronic and laser devices, optical fibres, medical devices and software, image processing, sensors, telecommunications, consumer electronics, textile manufacturing and processing, security systems, hydrocarbon surveying and extraction, packaging and tobacco products. She represents multinational corporations, SMEs and academic institutions in practice areas including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, assignment recordal, and preparation of opinions relating to the validity and infringement of patents and applications. 

Cathrine joined D Young & Co in 2001, having previously gained several year’s experience in a London-based private practice, where her caseload included patent, design, and trademark work. Cathrine became an associate at D Young & Co in 2002. 

Cathrine has been a lecturer for the CIPA Patent Administrator course.

Qualifications

BSc in Laser Physics and Optoelectronics, University of St Andrews (awarded the Neil Arnott Prize for Physics) 1993.
MSc in Medical Physics, University of Aberdeen.
PhD “Femtosecond optical parametric oscillators for the mid-infrared”, University of St Andrews.
Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.
Chartered Patent Attorney 2001 (awarded the Michael Jones Prize for UK qualifying examinations 2000).
European Patent Attorney 2002.
European Design Attorney.
