Practice & Professional Experience
Since 1999 James Turner has led a growing team of attorneys which serves the Sony group of companies, and which, in 2009, celebrated 40 years of continuous service to Sony Corporation. James has particular expertise in digital and analogue video, audio and image processing, storage and compression, lasers, fibres and optical communication. Currently his main area of work is computer game software and hardware. But as well as working with the Sony group, James has also provided many years of advice to universities and their spin-off companies, including preparing documents for company flotation.
James worked as a research engineer for the BBC before joining D Young & Co in 1991, after a period in-house with IBM’s UK Patent Department. James became a partner at D Young & Co in 1996.
James has extensive experience working for direct and agency clients in Japan and other Asian countries. As part of his commitment to this work he makes frequent visits to the region and studied the Japanese language for some years. His work has been recognised by James being personally identified in the review of D Young & Co as a top tier firm in the “Legal 500” directory for each of the years 2003-2008.

MA in Physics, Keble College, University of Oxford.
Certificate in Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary College, University of London.
Chartered Patent Attorney 1993 (awarded Gill Prize for highest marks in the 1992 UK qualifying examination).
European Patent Attorney 1993.
European Design Attorney.
Institute of Linguistics Preliminary Certificate in written and spoken Japanese.
