Working at the firm

Sophie Blake
Technical Assistant, Biotechnology, Chemistry & Pharmaceuticals Group

“After finishing my Master’s degree, I was keen to stay involved in science but found the work I was doing in a lab unrewarding. I wanted a career which would both challenge and intellectually stimulate me.

From day one at D Young & Co, I have been exposed to real cases and given substantive work to get stuck into. My day to day work is varied and can include drafting new patent applications to preparing to oppose a competitor’s patent on behalf of a client. This rewarding work requires an in-depth understanding of the technology involved, and the ability to formulate complex legal arguments and communicate them clearly and persuasively in writing.

Part of the job that I particularly enjoy is visiting clients to speak to them face to face about their new inventions. I have been lucky enough to attend several meetings, where I have had the opportunity to see the new invention in process.

Whilst the route to qualification takes about four years and the exams are notoriously difficult, the training at D Young & Co provides excellent on-the-job mentoring from one or several partners for whom you work directly. In addition, an excellent schedule of in-house tutorials is offered alongside external courses.

There is a fantastic work-life balance at the firm, and many social occasions are organised throughout the year, including sporting events and the well-renowned Christmas party!”

Anton Baker
Technical Assistant, Electronic, Engineering & IT Group

“I have been with D Young & Co since I joined the profession just over three years ago. I am now approaching what is hopefully my last set of exams, and qualification.

While the exams have been very tough, the support the firm has given has been exceptional. D Young & Co has an excellent program combining both internal and external tutorials and courses. The support the firm gives is easily seen in our impressive pass rate. Something you come to value very highly given the months of preparation that goes into each exam attempt!

The day-to-day work has also been extremely rewarding. Before starting my training, I completed a PhD in condensed matter physics. While I valued my time as a student, I have found the huge range of material I work on here as a trainee hugely enjoyable. For example, recently I worked on a network router, a power station and a medical device all in the same day!

By my stage as a technical assistant at D Young & Co, after you have got to grips with the basics of the job, you are given a steady increase in responsibility. This includes an ever greater degree of client contact as well as responsibility for administrative aspects of the job. It is a great feeling to follow an application all the way from the initial inventor meeting (rough prototype and all) through prosecution (arguing with the patent office), culminating, with a bit of luck, in the grant of the patent itself.”
