UK IPO General Notice - Ending the Reclassification of Trade Mark Specifications

UK IPO General Notice - Ending the Reclassification of Trade Mark Specifications

Reclassification of specifications of UK trade mark registrations will no longer be possible after 31 October 2011. Reclassification had been recommended following changes in the classification of certain services, to ensure that when availability searches are conducted all relevant earlier marks would be found and to ensure that protection of a trade mark on the register was unambiguous. However, it has not been possible to reclassify Community or international trade marks and reclassification of UK trade marks was not mandatory. Therefore the value of going through the process seems diminished. It will continue to be important to take advice when conducting trade mark searches to ensure that all potentially relevant classes are covered.
