Partner, Patent Attorney Southampton
Profile of Garreth Duncan

Over the past 20 years, I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great legal and scientific minds. Every day still brings that element of surprise as I never know what new and inspiring invention will hit my desk next.

Before I arrived at the firm, I worked in private practice as well as an in-house attorney at Pfizer – my experience taking in both their European and US Patent Departments. At Pfizer I was responsible for IP, both for new drugs in discovery, including drafting patent applications and prosecuting them worldwide, and for products in late-stage development, including providing validity and freedom-to-operate opinions and developing new IP opportunities for the products.

My 20 years’ experience in the patent profession embraces all chemical areas including pharmaceuticals, food chemistry, petrochemicals, agricultural and polymer chemistry, as well as chemical synthesis and processes. In the pharmaceuticals sector, I handle patent applications for new active substances, formulations, combination therapies, new medical indications, and manufacturing processes.

I have particular experience in obtaining supplementary protection certificates (SPCs) and other forms of patent term extension, advising clients on SPC strategies and filing and prosecuting SPC portfolios throughout Europe on a number of important marketed pharmaceutical and plant protection products. I also have experience advising on regulatory-based protection for pharmaceuticals.

I act for a broad spectrum of clients, from multinationals and up-and-coming life sciences companies through to universities, spin-out and start-up companies.
