Speakers

Simon O'Brien is a partner and Chartered and European patent attorney at D Young & Co. His practice covers biotechnology, molecular biology, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, food technology and nutrition. He has extensive experience in EPO oppositions and appeals, manages international patent portfolios and regularly lectures on life sciences patent law. Simon is also the founder and host of D Young & Co's Biotechnology European Patent Case Law webinar series.

Matthew Caines is a partner and Chartered and European patent attorney at D Young & Co. With a strong scientific background spanning molecular biology, microbiology and immunology, he advises clients on securing and defending patent protection for biotechnological and chemical innovations. He has extensive experience in European patent prosecution, oppositions, appeals and freedom-to-operate matters, supporting clients from early-stage ventures through to multinational organisations. Prior to joining D Young & Co, Matthew conducted research at the University of Oxford, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the University of British Columbia, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
