David Meldrum

I focus on delivering tangible commercial value for clients by developing patent strategies closely aligned with their business objectives. Whether designing effective patent portfolios, securing protection in technically and legally demanding fields, and navigating competitor patents to unlock commercial opportunity, I have a passion for assisting clients achieve genuine commercial gain.
Having joined D Young & Co in 2001 from another London private practice, I’ve been a partner since 2006. With an academic background in electronic engineering, my patent expertise spans a wide range of technologies. I counsel clients in areas of computing, software, digital and analogue electronics, networking and communications, gaming, medical technologies, fintech, and electromechanical devices.
I work with a diverse international client base, advising on patent procurement and opposition and appeal matters for European consumer and technology companies, large US corporations and UK start ups. I also provide strategic IP planning and portfolio management advice, particularly to SME clients without their own in-house lawyers. My practice regularly involves work across mainland Europe and the US, and I have extensive experience teaching patent drafting.
