IP Business Academy: Patenting the Transition to Net Zero
With a background in aeronautical engineering and experience across physics, engineering and IT, Andrew Cockerell advises clients on patent protection, portfolio strategy and patent intelligence. He has a particular interest in renewable energy and green technologies and is a member of the IPO’s Green IP working group. His recent work has examined how innovation in areas such as sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen and other emerging technologies can contribute to the transition towards net zero. Hosted by Prof Dr Alexander J Wurzer, Director IP Management Training, this LinkedIn event is organised with IP Business Academy and Center for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI).
The following questions will be discussed in the talk:
Reaching net zero will depend on combinations of technologies rather than individual breakthroughs, particularly in sectors such as aviation and energy. How should companies build an IP strategy when innovation is distributed across fuels, power systems, infrastructure, components and digital technologies?
Technologies such as sustainable aviation fuels, hydrogen propulsion and electrification are developing at different speeds and levels of commercial maturity. How should patent strategy evolve as technologies move from experimental concepts towards industrial deployment?
Green patent activity differs significantly between technologies and jurisdictions and is influenced by changes in industrial policy and investment. What can patent filing trends tell companies about where sustainable innovation is gaining momentum, and how can this information support strategic IP decisions?
Patent offices have introduced different mechanisms to accelerate environmentally beneficial inventions, while individual programmes and eligibility requirements continue to evolve. When can accelerated examination create a strategic advantage for green innovators, and how should companies integrate these programmes into an international filing strategy?
