Nathan Turnbull

I have a strong technical background in physics and a particular specialism in artificial intelligence, machine learning and semiconductor intellectual property. With experience both in-house and in private practice, I enjoy combining deep subject-matter expertise with a strategic, commercial approach, helping clients not just to obtain patents, but to build IP portfolios that work hard for their businesses.

My experience spans a wide range of high-technology areas, including AI, machine learning, semiconductor design (CPU, GPU and ML accelerators), software and computer-implemented inventions, medical devices, networking, and a range of mechanical technologies including automotive and aerospace engineering. I have experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the European Patent Office (EPO) and the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), as well as advising on patentability and IP strategy for clients ranging from multinational corporations to technology start-ups across the UK, Europe and internationally, and working with foreign law firms and patent attorneys around the world.

Prior to returning to private practice in 2026, I spent several years working in-house as a senior patent attorney at a leading semiconductor IP design company, where I was responsible for managing a significant machine learning patent portfolio. That experience gave me a deep commercial understanding of how patent strategy is developed and deployed within a technology business, and I bring that strategic, business-minded perspective to everything I do for clients.
