What I enjoy the most in my work is looking at my clients’ technical and legal challenges from a commercial perspective and untangling complex situations.
I have over 10 years of experience in IP, having worked both in private practice and in-house.
This has given me a broad experience, not only in advising clients on their inventions and portfolios but also in managing a portfolio in-house and in advising on third party’s infringement claims (in particular regarding standard essential patents - SEPs), licensing, IPR contractual clauses, inventor rights and IPR strategy. My experience also includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications and advising on oppositions (both sides) and on validity and infringement.
I have a special interest and expertise in telecommunications, computer networks and computer-implemented inventions, especially in handling unpatentable subject matter objections.
I began my career as a research engineer in the UK R&D centre of mobile operator Orange and also supported the Orange intellectual property department for all inventions from the R&D centre. I joined D Young & Co in 2009 as a trainee patent attorney and qualified as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in 2012, working in the electronics, engineering & IT team until 2017. I returned to D Young & Co as a partner in 2019 having acquired over two years’ experience working in industry as an in-house patent attorney at Vodafone.
I also enjoy getting involved in training candidates for the UK and European qualifying examinations. In addition to giving numerous tutorials, I spent four years (2015-18) as a course tutor for the "Advanced IP Law and Practice" UK paper (FD1-P2) for JDD Consultants.
