Nominet Considers Release Plan for Two Letter, One Character and Other Reserved .uk Domain Names Following Consultation Results
Following their consultation on the release of two letter, one character and other reserved .uk domain names (see our legal update of 21 April 2010), Nominet has published a summary and analysis of the responses to the consultation. These responses are to be used to draft a release plan on Nominet's website before the application process for short domains is fully opened. 165 responses were received from the public and the majority agreed that the domain names in question should be released.
Nominet's Policy Advisory Body has advised Nominet to release the domain names, commenting that adequate protection must be put in place first to protect those parties with legitimate prior rights. The standard practice is a phased release process and this looks likely to be applied to the release of these short domains. During the "sunrise" period, the proposal is to accept applications from those who can show bona fide use of a trade mark at a date prior to the 2008 recommendations to change the policy.
