Practice & Professional Experience

Ian specialises in the protection, enforcement and licensing of IP and related technology rights. He has particular expertise in the pharmaceutical, FMCG and broadcasting markets, as well as extensive experience of advising clients on strategy and dispute resolution on a worldwide basis. He has represented (and continues to represent) a number of household names in High Court litigation in the UK in trade mark, design right, copyright and patent cases. He has also acted in several ICC and LCIA arbitrations involving complex legal and technical issues. Ian is an accredited mediator and has been involved in many mediations, both as a mediator and as a client’s solicitor.

Ian worked in Hong Kong for two years and was a partner in two leading firms (1984-93 and 1993-2010). Ian joined D Young & Co in 2011 to establish the D Young & Co Dispute Resolution & Legal Group. Ian features as a leading IP solicitor in Chambers 2010; is featured in the 'MIP Expert Guide to the Leading Trade Mark law Practitioners’ (2012) and as a leading expert in Legal Business 2010.  In September 2011 Legal 500 refers to Ian as a 'great litigator' and 'seasoned IP litigator'.  Chambers UK 2012 notes that Ian is "a hugely knowledgeable IP litigator whose move from Ashurst has been the talk of the market".

Registered Trade Mark Attorney 1990.
International Trade Mark Association Mediator.
Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales 1979.
Higher Courts (Civil Advocacy) Qualified 2003.
